Dearest Subscriber First Name The lead up to International Women’s Day (IWD) usually carries an aura of uplifting joy. A blissful wave of the world remembering the paramount importance of celebrating women and celebrating the power that comes from unity. Today I reflect upon on what I wrote last IWD to see what progress has been made in the domestic violence space & what stories of triumph I could share to instil some hope that evolution was underway. It saddens me to say that similar to last IWD, our headlines are still flooded with news of the murder of an innocent woman & her children – no progress, no triumph.
I hate being the doom & gloom person but it’s my responsibility in this role to share what’s actually happening, rather than just sharing the sunshine & rainbows stuff (there is still plenty of that too). Inspired by one of the optimistic women in our employment program, we use our anger from these tragic & unfair situations as fuel for change and repeat after her “onwards and upwards - it’s the only way”.
It’s so important to find the light in these dark times, so
this International Women’s Day we want to acknowledge that it is this woman and the other women in our program, who are continually fighting for their safety and the safety of their children, who are our light. We also applaud the front line service providers who, despite the continued failures of the system, continue to show up and push for reform EVERY.SINGLE.DAY! We are mesmerised by their resilience and express our sincere gratitude and admiration on IWD & every day.
