I hope this finds you having a magnificent Sunday. I thought it was time we introduced ourselves and reveal a few super exciting things that have been happening behind the scenes at Mettle.

A BIT ABOUT ALESHA:
I might be a little biased, but it’s really hard to summarise someone as special as Alesha, anyone who knows her will agree. She has an etherial quality in that she always has an aura of calm and kindness that ensures everyone around her feels supported and valued. She has several years of experience in recruiting and training cohesive teams and creating a nourishing environment for them to flourish. She also happens to be an e-commerce genius, so when the plans for Mettle started to evolve and I realised they were probably a little more than I could handle alone, I asked Alesha to join me as my co-founder so that she could manage the buying, training & e-commerce side of Mettle. Lucky me, she said yes!
A BIT ABOUT ME:
I’m a big sister to three incredibly inspiring women, a dog mum to a super cute beagle named Murphy, and someone who tries to turn my empathy into positive action. Whilst working in the non-profit space, I began researching sustainable ways to support survivors of domestic & family violence. After a year of victim survivor consultations and establishing service provider partnerships, the Mettle Framework was complete. The end product - a social enterprise that had the capacity to operate predominantly from the revenue of sales, whilst acting as a sustainable employment & recruitment launch pad for survivors of domestic & family violence.
We are both so proud of the survivor designed framework that we have created and can not wait to share our stories of impact.

It is a privilege to introduce you to Cathy Oddie & Sheree Lucas Neto, our official Mettle Survivor Ambassadors. These women are an integral part of the survivor designed program, offering key insights from their lived experiences to ensure that the services we offer are as considerate and supportive as possible. To me, these women are beacons of hope for anyone who may not yet know the safest path away from abuse. To say we are honoured to work with such brilliant women doesn’t adequately convey our gratitude.

When I met our first #mettlewomen blog contributor, I was instantly blown away by her composure and kindness. Coming forward as a survivor is no small feat. To then go one step further and share a lived experience in an effort to reach others who may identify and benefit, is nothing short of exemplary magnanimity. This incredible woman reinforced the necessity of capturing the different faces of domestic and family violence. We want to ensure that our narrative encompasses diversity and demonstrates that all experiences are valid. I hope that in reading this story of mettle and hope, you understand that you too, deserve to be safe, supported, and happy.

WHITE RIBBON NIGHT
White Ribbon night kicked off this weekend. White Ribbon is paramount in advancing the wellbeing of Australians that experience domestic, family & sexual violence. They are working tirelessly to build a future free from violence and abuse and they need your support.

AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF HEALTH & WELFARE
This report builds on the AIHW’s inaugural Family, domestic and sexual violence in Australia 2018 report. It presents new information on vulnerable groups, such as children and young women. It examines elder abuse in the context of family, domestic and sexual violence, and includes new data on telephone and web-based support services, community attitudes, sexual harassment and stalking. It also includes the latest data on homicides, child protection, hospitals and specialist homelessness services.

ANROWS- THE COUPLE RULE
In designing the Mettle framework we conducted rigorous research to ensure that all barriers to financial security were identified and factored into our business plan. The couple rule came up quite often, with many of the victim survivors we interviewed noting they were denied welfare payments because their abusive partners were earning too much. This report and the recommendations made by ANROWS need to be taken seriously for impactful & sustainable change to take place.

WA ALLIANCE TO END HOMELESSNESS
The WA Alliance to End Homelessness recently published a response to the Assistant Minister for Homelessness, Luke Howarth, and to the Morrison Government. In this response they challenge the Minister and the Morrison Government to seek long-term solutions that will end homelessness rather than short-term responses that just manage immediate crisis. In our view, it’s imperative that these recommendations are adopted.
