THE WOMAN WHO TAUGHT US MORE THAN WE COULD EVER TEACH HER...

What is the one thing that keeps you fighting when life keeps placing challenges in front of you?

My love of family and freedom keeps me fighting through the battles that come my way and God gives me the strength.

Is there any bit of guidance or words of encouragement that you’d like to share for anyone who is going through what you have been through:

You don't have to live with violence, there is a way out, you’re not alone. Reach out discreetly to a family member or trusted friend to help plan your escape and never let on to your abuser that you’re leaving, that's the most dangerous time! There are refuges that will protect you and help you rebuild your life. When you have escaped the key is NO CONTACT and NO COMMUNICATION and NEVER LOOK BACK.  They don't change, they only get worse. You are not to blame. You are not responsible for their actions. You are starting a brand new life, the life you’re meant to have free from violence. To free your mind from the years of psychological and emotional abuse find a trusted counsellor and pour your heart and soul out. If you’re not comfortable with that start journaling any and everything that comes to mind and write it all down and to truly let things go either burn the pages or rip them up it's truly empowering. The goal is to soul search to find your true self, the you that was lost in all the chaos. Can't go back to the beginning, can't control what tomorrow will bring, try to live in the moment. Life is too short, do what you love and makes you happy!

Can you explain why it’s important that you have a private & safe place to work?

Having a safe work environment means the world to me. It means not having to deal with the general public on a daily basis which would increase the chance of being found by the perpetrator. It allows my mind to be free and flourish and be creative. It helps me explore my strengths and weaknesses and what job I would truly be suited to.

What has changed in your life since leaving the shelter?

Since leaving the shelter I managed to secure a beautiful rental and am now living in safety and free from violence. I am my true self, I have my own thoughts, feelings, ideas, opinions and make my own decisions. I am holding my own in the world and regularly spend time with my family either in person or on the phone. I'm currently studying and looking forward to the future while enjoying living in the moment. My desire is to help other women trapped to find there escape into a life free of violence and to feel safe and peaceful once and for all.
