THE FAIR TRADE DIFFERENCE - FAIR GO TRADING
Fair Go Trading began with a simple idea - that everyone deserves a fair go. Since 2005, they’ve been connecting Australian consumers with Fair Trade artisans around the world, creating meaningful opportunities through craft. From hand-hammered cheese knives made in India to soft crochet toys crafted by women in Bangladesh, each piece carries the care, skill, and spirit of the hands that made it.
We’re proud to share Fair Go Trading’s handcrafted creations in our gift boxes, small treasures that carry a big impact.
“Choose Fair Trade products in your purchasing decisions. Even small choices make a difference. It helps families in developing countries with fair wages, safe workplaces and environmental responsibility.”
What inspired the founding of Fair Go Trading, and how does the name reflect what you do?
Fair Go Trading was founded in 2005 to connect Australian consumers with Fair Trade artisan groups around the world. The name ‘Fair Go’ draws on an Australian ideal that everyone deserves an equal opportunity. We apply that principle globally with trade, partnering with Fair Trade producer groups in developing nations to create dignified, sustainable livelihoods through craft. Our focus has always been to connect artisans’ skill and tradition with Australian markets that value transparency, respect and human connection.
There is a growing awareness about ethical products, what does Fair Trade mean and how is it different from other ethical labels?
Fair Trade can be seen as a set of formal guidelines building on ethical ideals - adding the values of social equity, environmental care and transparency. It is a globally recognised system that places people and the planet at the centre of trade. However, calling something “Fair Trade” only matters if it can be proven. Fair Go has always worked with verifiable Fair Trade organisations and their artisan partners, like the women in Bangladesh who crochet each piece with incredible skill and patience, creating both beauty and opportunity through their work.
We have recently started stocking amazing Fair Trade cheese knives and a crochet toy in two of our giftboxes, could you walk us through the journey of these products and the artisans that make them?
Our cheese knives come from a family of skilled metal workers in India. Each piece is crafted from stainless steel with hand-hammered handles. Our artisans have access to safe workshops, regular income and training opportunities.
The crochet toys are handcrafted by women artisans in Bangladesh using recycled cotton. Many work from home, allowing them to balance family life while earning their own income.
What message would you like to convey to consumers about the importance of supporting the Fair Trade movement?
Choose Fair Trade products in your purchasing decisions. Even small choices make a difference. It helps families in developing countries with fair wages, safe workplaces and environmental responsibility.
The definition of Mettle is to face adversity with spirit and resilience. Is there someone in your life that has inspired you with their Mettle?
The truest examples of Mettle come from the artisans we work with. Many of them face challenges from economic hardship to social limitations, and yet their determination to create beauty through their craft and opportunity through their work never wavers. Women in rural Bangladesh, for example, continue to weave, dye and crochet despite obstacles and are able to support their families through our Fair Trade work.
